At the beginning of the 20th century, a plan was developed for the development of water communications in the Russian Empire. During the Soviet period, unique work was done to develop the infrastructure of ports and waterways – the canals and cascades of hydroelectric facilities were built, forming the Unified Deep Water System (UGS) and the North-South transport corridor in the Central European part of the country.
